Beady eyed bird looking for collectables and design stuff

1959 Royal Copenhagen Wall plaque, Piet Hein

Over the past few weeks I’ve been picking up interesting bits and pieces from various places, including eBay.

I was searching for Royal Copenhagen ceramics to try and feed my burgeoning patterned and painted ceramics obsession, when I came across this slightly strange but really linteresting little thing…

When I won this I didn’t have a clue about the significance of the poem of who Piet Hein was, and I was ever so slightly perturbed by what it’s meaning might be, so I decided to do a little bit of research.

It turns out that Piet Hein was a scientist, mathematician, designer and poet, who is famous in Denmark. During WW2 the German’s occupied Denmark and he joined the resistance movement and these little poems, known by the Danish as gruks or grooks, bypassed the censors, and became little snippets of resistance. Some of which were copied and graffiti’d all over the city.

I doubt very much if I hadn’t stumbled across this little thing that I would ever know about Piet Hien and his interesting history. So I’m very glad that I found it!
